Play On Playahs...Charlotte has a PlayDate

On Saturday, April 18, 2009, the Queen City hosted its first PlayDate™ and all the grown and sexy people came out to play. What is PlayDate™ you ask? Well, it’s an alternative to the typical night out. The PlayDate team led by Imari Havard travels to metropolitan areas across the country to host PlayDate™ at various venues. You pay the $10 admission fee to enter the “fun-filled and exciting atmosphere where you can enjoy good food and cocktails, listen to a variety of music, socialize, and meet great people all while playing games.” Yes games. Every game you can imagine from card games like Spades, Bid Whist, and UNO (you know); to board games like Monopoly and Taboo; and everything in between.

A diverse group was gathered at The Big Chill located at 911 E Morehead Street which provided a beautiful setting for the evening of fun. Each of the rooms had several tables of games going on at once. There were people on the floor playing chess, and standing room only at the Jenga station. Two fully stocked bar stations were available to purchase cocktails and a buffet was also provided for an additional price. The fireside bar provided a more intimate setting where there was a game of Pictionary, Chess, and several card games being played.

Although The Big Chill provided an elegant backdrop for the evening, the atmosphere was that of a house party. Those who were not playing were watching and commenting on the games. There were also group games like limbo, musical chairs, and hula hoops. My pick of the evening Jenga…if you have never played this game, make sure you are in the house at the next Charlotte PlayDate™. Bookmark their website for future events www.playdatecharlotte.com. A word to the wise, get there early so that you may have your pick of the games and seating.

With men and women between the ages of 25-50 interacting and playing games this should put to bed the notion that dating in Charlotte is a joke; because now we know for sure it’s a game. Play on Playas…Play On.
